Reading Challenge® was started in 2001 by Kevin Murphy. The impetus behind the establishment of this company was an afternoon of volunteering at an inner city Boys and Girls Club. Mr. Murphy was shocked to discover that these children had very little access to books. He also recognized that most of these children had major distractions and challenges in their lives. The key would be developing books which are fun, appropriate, and inspirational.
The foundation of Reading Challenge® is the Values in Action® Series which helps facilitate character education through Illustrated Classics and non-fiction accounts of the lives of notable historical and contemporary figures.
Titles are available in library bindings and soft cover classroom sets. Each series includes an accompanying Teacher’s Guide with quizzes, crafts and assessment tools. Teacher's Guides include a special section to assist in engaging and teaching the reluctant reader.
At Reading Challenge®, we are committed to working with schools, nonprofits, and corporations to ensure every child has access to great books: Since 2001, Reading Challenge® in partnership with corporations and nonprofits has provided more than $2,000,000 of books to children in need.
